"Drawing invites to consider, from a benevolent angle, sites and situations that may generate more rejection than attraction. It allows a better understanding of the complexities of our time creating their own way of harmony and poetry. Cars everywhere, bundles of railways, heterogeneous structures, overground, undergrounds. To the word “chaos” I prefer those of complexity or hybridity. The city is the simultaneity of various situations, even antagonistic, all claiming legitimacy. The drawing I practice seeks to take all that into account. To capture these heterogeneities is to take cavalier perspectives, “à vol d’oiseau”, axonometric views."

Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1994) was a brazilian architect with italian roots. While in Brazil I got to see some of her great works. Here a top 5.
1. SESC Pompeia
An old factory turned into a place for leisure. The way she introduced her own concrete structures in the old factory is very well done. My favorite part of the building is where the water has been introduced. A fun element in the industrial surroundings.

2. Casa de Vidro
Her own house, “the glass house”, was once surrounded by nature, now by the ever growing city of São Paulo. The place is now hidden in the forest like garden. (Which is also worth walking in! Especially to discover the turtle living there as well in between the artworks.) Not only the house is special, also the furniture Lina designed is great to see.

3. MASP
Probably her most famous work, this Museum of Art in São Paulo. Famous for it’s massive span, underneath which people often start their protests (it is located next to the main avenue of São Paulo, Avenida Paulista). Besides the overwhelming exterior, there is also some really nice architecture to see in the interior. Especially the lower part of the building, with some really cool red stairs.

4. Casa do Benin
A small museum in Salvador, not very easy to find. The little courtyard is again very Lina: rough concrete (very nicely cast), combined with nature. It feels very pure in the very colorful city Salvador is.

5. Teatro Oficina
A small experimental theatre in São Paulo. The theatre is like a street that descends into the city block. Again nature plays a big role in this work of her as well as the “unfinished” raw and playful feeling.
